India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Following Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the recommended level established by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x higher than safe levels.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as winter sets in.

Yet recently, the newly elected city administration approached the judicial authority to propose a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Court Verdict and Implementation

The situation in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air arrives.

Health and Economic Consequences

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous research.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
